Public Hearings

The Center for People in Need posts information on upcoming public hearings on selected measures. Committees begin holding hearings a few weeks after the January start of a legislative session. Committees have assigned hearing rooms and meeting days, although they sometimes meet at different times and places. Most hearings begin at 1:30 p.m. and committees usually hear several bills during an afternoon. Citizens are encouraged to testify in person; letters or written communications also are accepted by committees during a hearing. Public hearings are listed with each piece of legislation on this website.

Tips on testifying:

  • Be sure to sign in on the sheet inside the hearing room door, listing the bill numbers you are testifying about and your name and the organization you are with.
  • If you are submitting written rather than verbal testimony, please make sure to hand it to the committee clerk and ask that it be included in the public record. Or you can send it to the committee chair before the hearing with a note asking that it be included in the public record.
  • If the committee runs out of time to hear all testimony, please plan to submit your written testimony on each bill for the record. It helps to bring copies of your testimony with you, just in case time runs out.
