LB962

Require blood lead testing prior to school enrollment.

Description:

Lead is a potent, pervasive neurotoxicant, and elevated blood lead levels can result in decreased I.Q., academic failure and behavioral problems in children. The purpose of LB962 is to improve the health and remove impediments to the academic achievement of Nebraska’s children by imposing a blood lead testing requirement along with the immunizations required for enrollment in kindergarten. Blood lead testing will facilitate early detection and referral for treatment of lead poisoning, reduce the incidence, impact and cost of lead poisoning; inform parents and guardians of their children’s exposure to lead; and promote the importance of reducing exposure to lead as an integral component of preparation for school and learning.
