ACTION ALERT: Ask State Senators to vote no on roads bill

State Sen. Deb Fischer’s LB84 would earmark up to $120 million per year from the state’s sales tax revenues for the next 20 years to build roads. The bill passed on first reading, 32-8. Since then Gov. Heineman has stated that he opposes the bill because it would hamper the state’s ability to utilize funds over a long period of time and reduce funding for other necessary state programs. The bill will be up for second-round debate in the next several days.

The Governor is right. Earmarking a one-half cent cut from the state’s sales tax revenue would leave less money for funding of education, human services, and other necessary state obligations. The state’s budget is already squeezed to the limit without such an earmark.

Further, the state’s roads are already in comparatively good shape. Nebraska ranks fifth in the quality of its roads and ninth in the amount spent on roads per capita. There is no need for this earmark.

In addition, LB84 would bind future Legislatures for 20 years. Nebraska’s economy is not so stable as to allow this kind of restriction. The Legislature should be able to consider the economy’s current condition when it considers spending measures.

Please write the Governor and thank him for opposing LB 84, and write state senators to urge them to oppose it as well. This bill would rob funds from education and other important needs when doing so is not necessary and represents bad policy for the future.
