ACTION ALERT: LB 970 Cuts Taxes for the Wealthy

LB 970 Cuts Taxes for the Wealthy; Will Not Help the Middle Class

Nebraska’s middle class and low-income families should be our number one priority, but LB 970 fails to deliver. The state is already struggling to invest in education, transportation and safe communities – things that we know create jobs and boost a state’s economy. LB 970 will require significant cuts to basic core functions of government that could potentially affect services for children and youth, foster care, and low-income individuals and families. LB 970 would place funding for such services upon local communities.

The Governor claims that LB 970 will bring relief to Nebraska’s hardworking, middle class families. The facts state otherwise. Under LB 970, the average Nebraskan would only reduce their income tax by $74 a year. More than half of the income tax cuts proposed in LB 970 will benefit the richest 20%.

Nebraskans cannot afford this tax cut. LB 970 nearly doubles the deficit we are facing next year, making it that much harder to keep class sizes small in K-12 and for families to afford a college education for their kids.

LB 970 is supposed to help Nebraska’s small businesses grow. Yet, the proposed corporate tax cuts will benefit only Nebraska’s largest and most profitable corporations. Only the top wealthiest 11% of Nebraska’s corporations will benefit from this proposal, excluding most small family businesses.

Nebraskans cannot afford LB 970 because:

  • It will force significant cuts to investments in children and youth services, education, transportation and community safety
  • It helps a small number of large, profitable corporations
  • It benefits the richest Nebraskans at the expense of the middle class and low-income families
