Tools for Education scheduled forJuly 30-31
The Tools for Education event is coming soon!
Tools for Education is 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, July 30, and 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, July 31. Both events are at the Center for People in Need, 3901 N. 27th St. Ste. 1 (south side of the building), enter through Door 3. Tools for Education is for school-age children entering kindergarten through 12th grades. Each child will receive a backpack containing school supplies.
Clients must bring their Center for People in Need card or fill out a short application to get a card at the event. Bring a photo ID, a piece of mail showing your current address and proof of members of the household. Household income must be 150 percent or less of the federal poverty level.
Weekly educational presentations
The Center for People in Need’s Health Hub provides weekly informational sessions to anyone in the community almost every Tuesday from 3:00-4:00 p.m., at the Center’s 27th Street Conference Center, 3901 N. 27th St. Unit 1, enter through Door 3. The next session is Tuesday, July 26, featuring Clinic with a Heart with Teresa Harms. Those attending the sessions will have the opportunity to be first in line for the Neighborhood FOOD distribution following the presentation.
Upcoming sessions are: Aug. 2, Juvenile Justice System with Sara Holle; Aug. 9, Health Care Reform with George Lyford of Nebraska Appleseed; Aug. 16, no session; Aug. 23, Making Nutritious Meals with food from the Neighborhood FOOD program, with Janet Buck of Matt Talbot Kitchen and Outreach; and Aug. 30, Every Woman Matters with Melissa Leypoldt.
Pool passes available
Discount pool passes for low-income families are available at the Center for People in Need and Neighborhood FOOD distribution sites. You do not need to have a Center card to receive a discount pool pass. The discount pool passes are for entry at only one pool.
Some immigrants losing benefits, we’re here to help
As a result of the passage of LB465 by the Nebraska Legislature and approval by Gov. Dave Heineman, some immigrants are losing certain public assistance benefits. As a result, the Center for People in Need is working with other local human service agencies to inform immigrants and try to fill the gaps in services. For more information, click here.

Latest survey results released
Results from the latest Center for People in Need surveys have been released. The 2010 Face of Poverty survey of families attending the Toyland for Kids toy distribution in December is available by clicking on this link. Computer classes and lab available to public
We now offer basic computer skills classes on Saturdays! Click on this link to find out times and classes offered.
The Center for People in Need also has a computer lab available for public use 4 p.m.-8 p.m. Tuesdays and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays. The 24-seat computer lab has programs that can accommodate needs ranging from resume writing and job searches, homework, and applying for government assistance, including SNAP food stamps.
Immigrant and refugee services
Civics classes for the naturalization test, citizenship and immigration paperwork assistance, and refugee resettlement assistance are being offered at the Center for People in Need. Click on this link for more information.

CFPIN’s Pathways Program accepting applications
The Pathways Program is accepting applications for the green construction training program. Applicants must live on the north side of O Street, be at least 18 years old and meet ONE of the following criteria: currently unemployed, high school dropout, past criminal record, low-income or a veteran or veteran’s spouse if otherwise qualified. Pathways is a Lincoln Green Jobs Partnership between the Center for People in Need and Southeast Community College and is funded through a federal stimulus grant.
